It can be a bit of a challenge to seek out a wine cooler, when you have gotten into the idea of storing your wine the best possible way.

The product range is enormous, variables seem almost endless and everyone has individual preferences, not to mention budgets.

Wine cooler buying guide

We will guide you around some of the aspects you should take into consideration when purchasing a wine cooler.

Basically there are two ways of using a wine cooler.

Wine cooler for consumption or storage

The wine cooler is to some people considered a serving tool you use in your daily life. Here the idea is that you always have a stock of bottles ready to open whenever you feel like it. You keep a few extra bottles of red, white, rosé, sparkling or dessert wine ready for an unplanned or spontaneous situation. And a carefully planned situation, of course.

A wine cooler that meets this function best is a cooler with two or more temperature zones. The concept is that in one zone you keep whites, sparkling and other wines for immediate serving at a temperature about 7-8°C. In the other zone you have the red wines prepared for service at about 17-18°C. You are primarily looking for a dual-zone wine cooler if this is the primary purpose intended for your wine cooler.

Another way of using a wine refrigerator is for the purpose of long term storage. Here it is all about quiet, stability and stable temperature. The ideal cellar holds a stable temperature arond 10 to 15°C, a relative humidity around 75 percent and out of the light. Such a wine cellar actually can be set up inside a cabinet, namely a single temperature zone wine cooler.

How to buy a wine cooler

First of all, you should read this wine cooler guide. There are so many aspects it is advised to take into consideration when looking for a wine cooler.

For your convenience we have made this guide to buying a wine cooler.

Why buy a wine fridge?

A wine fridge is the best thing, you can do to your wine. Especially if you wish to store your wines for a longer period of time, a wine fridge is indispensable. Unless, off-course, you are the lucky owner of a regular cave deep inside a mountain or a deep cellar under a house. If so, congratulations with having the rest of us rightfully envying you and your bottles.

What is a wine fridge?

A good wine fridge can recreate the optimal conditions required for storing wine ideally.

A wine fridge will keep the temperature steady and take care of your precious bottles to the benefit of you and your fellow wine lovers.

Why dual zone wine cooler?

A wine cooler with two temperature zones is also called a wine serving cabinet or fridge.

It is designed to keep your wines at ideal serving temperature in two compartments; one for the red wines and another for your white wines, sparkling and dessert wines.

Why use a wine cooler?

It is all about stability. As opposed to a standard refrigerator, a wine cooler is designed to keep a steady temperature with a tolerance of one degree Celsius. Also, a wine cooler can usually keep a steady temperature from 5°C and up to 22°C, so the range is significantly larger and more stable.

The cooling compressor of a wine cooler is mounted on a silicone base that absorbs vibrations, which is essential as wine requires calm and quiet.

How to use a wine cooler

The best way to use a wine cooler is by installing it in your kitchen if you are looking for a wine serving cooler to have a wine bottle ready for service at any time.

You can also keep sodas, beer, mineral water in the wine cooler if you need space in your regular refrigerator.

What wine fridge is the best?

Since there are many different kinds of wine fridge, the answer is not simple. The many parameters you should consider when buying a wine fridge makes it practically impossible to point at one as being the best.

Some brands have better reputation and track record than others.

What size wine fridge?

They come in many sizes. Recent years it has become very popular to install a wine fridge in the kitchen as a great way to keep a number of bottles ready at serving temperature. Dual zone wine fridges are the best fit for that function, because you will get a supply of red wines and white wines ready at each their optimal temperature. Such wine fridges come in various sizes for installation under the countertop or as totally integrated wine cooler solution in a full-size cabinet.

Standard ground measurements of most wine fridges are 60x60 cm. thus fitting perfectly in most kitchen systems.

What temperature should a wine fridge be at?

For storage the optimal temperature for wine is between 12°C and 16°C, and the most important part of this is maintaining a stable temperature. With a dual temperature or multizone wine fridge, the temperature can be set at the desired serving temperature of the given wine. As a suggestion, the zone for white and sparkling wines can be set at 5-10°C and the warmer zone for red wines at 12-18°C.

What wine fridge to buy?

It all depends on your needs. Are you looking for an electronic wine cellar for long term storage or are you interested in always having a bottle ready for service?
Roughly and generally speaking there are two kinds of wine fridges, each specifically designed for its purpose. Wine storage fridges are also called single zone wine fridges, since their purpose is to keep your wines at a stable temperature replicating the conditions of an ideal wine cellar. The other main category of wine fridges is coolers for wine serving. Such wine coolers are called dual zone, two-zone or double zone wine fridges.

What to store in a wine fridge?

Wine, obviously, is the primary target cargo of a wine fridge, hence the name. Read about how to store wine. Nonetheless a wine fridge is also very well suited to keep beer for long term storage, if you want to explore this rewarding side of the barley-based beverage.

In dual zone wine fridges, you can keep a supply of beers, sodas and other drinks at perfect serving temperature. This is a great way to make space in your regular refrigerator.

What not to store in a wine fridge?

We do NOT recommend storing chocolate and especially cheese in a wine fridge, since the emission of vapors and CO2 is damaging to the mechanical elements in the wine fridge.

Which wine cooler?

Depending on what function, you want from a wine cooler, you can choose either a single temperature zone cabinet that replicates an ideal wine cellar or a so-called wine serving cooler with two or several zones of different temperatures.

Can you use a wine cooler for beer?

Oh yes! Aging of beer is being rediscovered by breweries, serious bars and enthusiasts. The best conditions for aging and storing beer are similar as with wine: a classic wine cellar.

A wine cooler is essentially a mechanical replica of a wine cellar and therefore an ideal place to age your beers in an upright position.

Can wine fridges be used for food?

As a basic rule, we do not recommend storing food in a wine fridge, since the temperature is not cold enough for food.

Can a wine fridge go in a cupboard?

Yes. There are several ways to install a wine fridge in your kitchen cabinets.

You can have a wine fridge under the counter or in a cabinet as flushfitted wine fridge, integrated wine fridge or a built-in wine fridge.

Can you keep a wine fridge in a garage?

Yes, you can. As long as your garage is frost free, many brands of wine fridges are able to keep the wine at the same temperature. They are called wine fridges for cold environment

You should make sure, though, by consulting your dealer or the user manual.

Wine cooler with removable and adjustable shelves

Most wine coolers of today come with retractable shelves that can be disassembled from the cabinet itself. This way, you can design the interior of your wine fridge as it pleases you.

As a bonus, you will get more storage capacity the more shelves you remove.

Built in wine cooler under counter

Wine cooler with front ventilation are specially designed for installation under the kitchen counter top. This design permits the warm air to escape from the wine cooler.

See the technical specifications of each model or ask your wine cooler supplier when in doubt.

Wine cooler with temperature control

The core feature of a wine cooler is the ability to control and keep a steady temperature to ensure the best conditions for your wine collection.

This is paramount for any wine cooler to call itself a wine cooler!

How much electricity does a wine cooler consume?

There are big differences in the amount of electricity used by the different wine coolers. Power consumption depends on several factors, such as the number of zones and insulation. This is one of the reasons why all wine cabinets are labelled with an Energy Label. Most refrigerators use between 150–250 kW/year. If you are interested in an energy-saving low-energy wine cabinet, you might take a look at our cabinets from Vestfrost, which are at the low end of electricity consumption.

Wine cooler with humidity control

Some, but not all, wine coolers have a hygrometer installed to monitor the humidity inside the cabinet. This allows you to keep an eye on the level of humidity which should be around 50-80%.

If you want the wine cooler to keep the humidity at a pre-set level, it is possible with a few models.

Wine cooler or regular refrigerator?

A standard refrigerator is brilliant for cooling down the wines that you want to enjoy now. But as a substitute for a wine cooler, it is not advised.

First of all, a wine cooler is specifically designed to keep a steady temperature with a tolerance of +/- 1°C and the cooling compressor is mounted on a rubber/silicone base that absorbs vibrations, which is important for long term storage of wine.

Wine fridge or cellar?

If you have a cellar with a constant year-round temperature at 12-16°C, with no vibrations (from a railroad, airport, heavy traffic road) and no light, you may consider yourself a very lucky person.
